A very cool movie. I would definitely say its an intersection of Napoleon Dynamite, Mean Girls, and High School Musical. A lot of these teen and pre-teen movies are addressing a lot of modern topics, which is GOOD. However, it didn’t delve into issues - it was pretty simple and kid-friendly.
The plot is about a hemaphrodite named ‘Spork’, who enters a dance off to win money for a plastic surgery and to beat her arch nemisis a.k.a the mean/popular girl. I went into this movie blind because the synopsis that some website provided was vague and yet exciting. I literally saw “girl dances to songs like ‘Supersonic’ by J.J. Fad to win middle school dance competition” and then I went to go see it.
There are a lot of random and exaggerated shots that gives the film an awkward humor. I can’t relate on being an hemaphrodite, but the fact that this plot falls against a schoolyard drama backdrop makes it relatable for any girl who has gone through awkwardness and mean ass b****es.
Sidebar: the mean girls look like pageant girls - seriously I thought I was looking at JonBenet Ramsey.
The only thing that bothered me was the Bring-It-On situations between the booty-poppin’ ghetto black girls and the “really” white mean girls. The black girls were one sided and too stereotypical, but so were the mean girls. So I’ll let it pass with this movie because give it kudos for the chubby Asian boy who wasn’t passive and he wasn’t a geek.
Awesome note: the main character favorite movie was The Wiz! not The Wizard of Oz.
Overall, it was a cute story that is heart-warming and a nice underdog story.
